FERRUM, Va. -- The second-ranked Christopher Newport University men's soccer team (6-0-1) will open the USA South Conference slate this weekend, as they travel to Ferrum College and Averett University. The Captains will take on the Panthers on Saturday at 1:00 pm Saturday, followed by a trip to Averett on Sunday, also scheduled for a 1:00 pm kickoff.
Christopher Newport was scheduled to open league play last weekend, but heavy rainfall postponed the opener vs. N.C. Wesleyan to October 12. Instead, the Captains will face Ferrum on Saturday for the first test in league play.
CNU has not played since September 21, when they shut out then-No. 18 Salisbury University on the road, 3-0. Seniors
Brian Lybert and
Winston Mattheisen are tied for the team lead in goals, with five apiece. Defensively, the reigning two-time USA South Defensive Player of the Week is senior goalkeeper
Justin Wolfe. Wolfe has played every minute for the Captains this season, posting three shutouts and a goals against average of 0.82.
