NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The No. 17 Christopher Newport University field hockey team blanked No. 20 Johns Hopkins 6-0 at Captains Field. Junior Caitlin Cahill led the way with two goals and two assists. The win improved CNU to 5-2 and dropped Johns Hopkins to 5-3.

The scoring started just three minutes into the game. Cahill took the ball to her left in the circle and shot with a reverse sweep that slipped by the goalkeeper to give the Captains the 1-0 lead. Just seven minutes later the Captains struck again. Cahill carried the ball down the right side and crossed the ball to junior Chrissy Kurecki who slapped the ball into the cage for her third goal of the season.

Down by two the Blue Jays used their only timeout to regroup. But the Captains kept up the pressure and just seven minutes later Cahill took a free possession near the top of the circle, carried the ball in and shot, scoring her second goal of the game. The score remained 3-0 into the second half.

It took the Captains almost 20 minutes to score their next goal which came on a penalty corner. Junior Paige Childers injected the ball on the corner to Cahill who took a shot that was deflected into the cage by sophomore Shelby Judkins for her second goal of the year.

Five minutes later the Captains notched another goal extending their lead to 5-0 with 15 minutes left in the game. Childers carried the ball down the right side and once in the circle crossed the ball to sophomore Meghan Sullivan who slapped it in past the Blue Jays keeper for her second goal of the year.

On another free possession just nine minutes later sophomore Marlene Lichty took the ball, carried it five yards and sent it into the circle. Junior Lindsay Hendricks deflected the ball away from the Johns Hopkins goalkeeper to sophomore Hilary St. Mary's who touched the ball into the cage to seal a 6-0 victory for the Captains.

After the game the Captains coached a clinic for almost 70 local children in second grade through high school. The kids are split into groups based on age and skill level and the Captains help them develop basic skills to advanced concepts.

The Captains host Frostburg State on Friday at 7:00pm and are looking to extend their win streak to four games.
