NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 17th ranked Christopher Newport Captains field hockey team (5-2) scored four second-half goals to cruise to a 5-0 win over Virginia Wesleyan tonight, improving to 4-2 overall this season.
Shelby Judkins (Hampton, Va.) led the way for CNU, scoring the game-winning goal and adding an assist later in the game.
The Captains dominated the contest, outshooting the Marlins by a final count of 32-3. CNU scoreed just one goal, though, on 11 shots in the first 35 minutes. Judkins scored in the 11th minute of action with an unassisted tally.
CNU struck early in the second half, scoring just 34 seconds into the frame. Junior
Caitlin Cahill (Virginia Beach, Va.) put away a centering pass from
Brianna Milne (Virginia Beach, Va.). Just under eight minutes later,
Chrissy Kurecki (Richmond, Va.) knocked home a shot on the back post out of the air after Judkins laced a shot off the goalkeeper's pads.
CNU got two more goals from
Marlene Lichty (Chesapeake, Va.) and
Kelsey Clark (Arlington, Va.) for the final, 5-0.
Sophomore goalkeeper made two late saves for the Captains after coming off the bench for some action in the second half. Marlin junior Allie Lanna got away from the Captain defense for a breakaway at about the 40 yard line. As she continued toward the goal Collins met her at the top of the circle and layed out stopping the ball and hitting it away with her stick. A recovering CNU defender gathered the ball and cleared it back down the field.
Just minutes later Collins saved another shot by Lanna who collected the rebound and put the ball past Collins where
Brianna Milne scooped the ball up for the defensive save.
The 5-0 win was the largest margin of victory for the Captains this season.
CNU returns to the field on Sunday as they host No. 20 Johns Hopkins University. Game time is slated for 1:00pm.
