NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University field hockey team improved to 3-2 with a 2-0 win over Wesley College on Captains Turf today. The Captains outshot the Wolverines eight to two and edged them in corners eight to four.

The Captains didn't waste any time before they found their first scoring opportunity with a penalty corner just three and a half minutes into the game. Although unable to convert they continued the pressure earning two more penalty corners before a scrum in front of the cage resulted in a penalty stroke.

Senior Lauren Cherry came off the bench to take her second penalty stroke of the year and was successful once again giving the Captains a 1-0 lead at 10:56.

The Captains played with an impressive passing game that allowed them to control most of the play. They held Wesley to zero shots in the first half and only allowed two in the second. The Captains' defense only allowed four penalty corners.

Five minutes into the second half the Captains earned a corner. Chrissy Kurecki injected the ball to Caitlin Cahill who took the ball right and ripped a shot into the far corner of the cage for her third goal of the year.

Jamie Dowling picked up three saves in the game as she picked up her third win of the season.

The Captains return to action on Wednesday at 7:00pm as they host the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College.
