FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Christopher Newport University field hockey team traveled to Fredericksburg today for a neutral site match versus Centre and came away with a decisive 4-0 victory. Four different Captains scored with senior
Lauren Cherry getting the game winner. The Captains improved to 2-1 with the win.
The Captains and Colonels battled back and forth in the beginning of the first half as the Captains had trouble getting into a passing rhythm while turning the ball over numerous times. But as the Captains composed themselves the scoring opportunities began to come their way.
With just seven minutes left in the first half sophomore
Meghan Sullivan received a ball in the circle for a one-on-one opportunity with the Centre goalkeeper who dove taking Sullivan down. The referee promptly called a penalty stroke for the Captains. Cherry entered the game from the bench to take the stroke for the Captains. She put the ball into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
Just two minutes later Sullivan was part of her second goal of the game as she scored off an assist from freshman
Belle Tunstall. The goal was Sullivan's second career goal and first of the 2011 season.
CNU's passing game improved in the second half and they were able to control much of the play. Seven minutes in sophomore
Hilary St. Mary scored her first goal of the year with the assist going to junior
Chrissy Kurecki.
Just two minutes later a Centre defender was playing low behind the keeper when a deflection came off the stick of a CNU attacker into the defender's body causing a foul resulting in a penalty stroke. Sophomore
Marlene Lichty stepped up for the Captains scoring the stroke and her first goal of the season.
The Captains outshot the Colonels 19 to four and had 13 corners to Centre's six. Goalkeepers
Jamie Dowling and
Julie Collins shared time in the game with neither earning a save. Junior
Brianna Milne had a defensive save for the Captains on Centre's only shot on goal.
CNU travels back to Fredericksburg tomorrow for a game versus Division I Liberty University set to start at 4:00pm.
