Captains Fall to #15 Washington and Lee in First Round

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team ended their season with a 15-6 loss in the first round of the NCAA tournament to #15 Washington and Lee University. The Captains were led by senior Meghan Harkey who netted three goals and added an assist.

After almost 10 minutes of play in the first half and one shot by each team, the Generals were awarded a free position shot and took advantage to score their first goal of the game at 21:44. The Captains answered just two minutes later as Harkey moved between defenders and shot to tie the game at 1-1.

Washington and Lee scored their second goal of the game off another free position attempt to regain the lead with 17 minutes left in the first half. A third free position shot extended the Generals' lead to two with 13:48 remaining in the half.

With just under 12 minutes left in the half Harkey came passed the ball to Kaitlin Quigley right in front of the goal where she put the ball into the back of the net to bring the Captains to within one.

The Generals went on a three goal run to give them a 6-2 lead with 7:31 remaining. As the half was coming to an end Mathews scored her fourth goal of the game to give the Generals a five goal lead at halftime.

The Generals started the second half with three goals in under three minutes to take a 10-2 lead at 27:16.

After three big saves by Captains' goalkeeper Hannah Wilkerson the Generals were eventually able to put another goal in the net to give Washington and Lee a nine goal lead at 18:22.

 After putting up two more goals by the Generals the Captains called a timeout and minutes later Jessica Singer scored the Captains' third goal of the game off a pass from Ashton Marshall.

The Captains scored again with Harkey netting her second goal of the game with 5:36 remaining in the game. A free position attempt under a minute later resulted in another goal for the Captains as Harkey scored her third of the game to make the score 13-5.

Washington and Lee scored two goals in the final minutes of the game to make it 15-5. With just seconds left in the game Becca Geist scored off a free position shot to make it a 15-6 final score.

The Generals will advance in the tournament to play Salisbury University in Salisbury, Md. on Saturday at 11:30am.
