NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – With their 20-11 win over Shenandoah University the Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team finished 2011 USA South play with a 7-0 record and took the regular season title for the fifth year in a row. It is also the fifth year in a row that the Captains went undefeated in USA South regular season play.
CNU took a quick 4-0 lead with goals from
Jessica Singer,
Meghan Harkey and two from
Rachel Tomlinson. The Hornets went on a three-goal run to come back to within one goal. The two teams swapped goals before CNU went on a three-goal run to make it 8-4 with 15:12 left in the first half.
Shenandoah scored one more before the Captains piled on four more to extend their lead to seven. The Hornets put another goal on the board and CNU answered with three more before the end of the half for a 15-6 halftime score.
The Hornets netted the first goal in the second period off a free position shot by
Samantha Sisson. Under a minute later Harkey scored for the Captains on a free position shot. They traded another pair of goals as CNU maintained their nine goal lead.
Shenandoah went on a run scoring three goals in just over three minutes to come back to within six at 17-11. But CNU came back with three goals in the last four minutes of the game to earn the 20-11 victory.
Harkey led the Captains with five goals and five assists for 10 points in the game.
Ashton Marshall also scored five goals and Tomlinson put up three.
Morgan Layton and Tomlinson both had five ground balls. Layton,
Monica Evans and
Stephanie Green all had two caused turnovers.
Hannah Wilkerson made seven saves in the net for the Captains and earned her 11th win of the year.
The Captains outshot the Hornets 49 to 24 and had 23 ground balls to their eight.
