FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Christopher Newport University men's tennis team locked up the second seed in the 2011 USA South Tournament with a 9-0 victory over Methodist University today. CNU will play #7 seeded Greensboro College in the opening round of next week's Tournament, at 9:00 am Friday morning.
The Captains improved to 11-5 overall this season and wrapped up the conference season with a 5-1 mark. Methodist drops to 12-6 overall and 3-3 in league play.
Eric Shulman did not give up a game in his singles match against Matthew Taylor at the No. 1 position, winning 6-0, 6-0. He also paired with
Dusty Nelson for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Duncan Miller and
Gian Heyer played at No. 2, with the CNU junior taking a 6-2, 6-2 win.
Sophomore
Garrett Widing won at No. 3 and Nelson won at No. 4, while rookie
Josef Manilla put away Robert Clayton for the win at No. 5. Manila and
Matt King were good for the win at No. 2 doubles, coming away with the closest match of the day, a 9-7 win.
Lorenzo Sison stepped in for the injured King in singles, winning at No. 6, 6-4, 6-3.
The Captains will have two more tune-up matches before next week's USA South Tournament as they face off against Salisbury University on Tuesday, April 12 and then at Mary Washington on Thursday, April 14.
