Captains Fall to #19 Mary Washington, 19-15

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team was topped by #19 Mary Washington 19-15. It was only the second loss of the season for the Captains who are now 10-2.

Mary Washington was the first team to score as they put in their first goal at 28:39. Kaitlin Quigley scored her first goal of the night just four minutes later to make it 1-1. The Eagles went on a three-goal run before the Captains came back with two goals.

The two teams traded goals with UMW scoring at 15:10 before the Captains went on a three-goal run to take the lead 7-6 with 12 minutes remaining in the half. But the Eagles were able to score four more before the half to take a 10-7 lead.

The Eagles came out in the second half and score two goals in under a minute to extend their lead to five. The two teams swapped the next 11 goals until Rachel Tomlinson scored two in a row for the Captains to pull within three at 17-14.

With 3:19 remaining the Eagles scored another goal to make it 18-14. Quigley scored her sixth goal of the game at 1:59 to pull within three again. But the Eagles scored another with just 30 second left to end the game at 19-15.

The team stats were close between the two teams with Mary Washington taking 38 shots and CNU taking 34. The Eagles had 18 ground balls to the Captains' 15 and CNU edged the Eagles in draw controls winning 20 out of 36. The two teams both turned the ball over 17 times.

Quigley was a part of nine of the Captains' goals with six goals herself and three assists. Jessica Singer, Meghan Harkey, Ashton Marshall, and Tomlinson each scored a pair of goals.

Monica Evans and Maddy Connor both had three ground balls while Quigley had a team high 10 draw controls. Hannah Wilkerson made 12 saves for the Captains.

The Captains host Shenandoah University on Saturday, April 9, at 1:00pm in their last regular season home game of the year.
