GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Christopher Newport University men's lacrosse team defeated Greensboro College 12-11 in their final game of the 2011 season. The win improved the Captains to 7-8 and dropped the Pride to 5-11. CNU was led by
John Glaser and
Matt Gleisner who each scored four goals in the win.
Greensboro scored first at 11:38 in the first period. The Captains took advantage of a holding penalty on the Pride and scored a man-up goal at 9:27 and then another goal at 7:24 to take a 2-1 lead. But the Pride was able to come back and score three straight goals in the last seven minutes of the first period to take a 4-2 lead.
CNU scored the only goals in the second period with
Chase Walton scoring at 13:57 and Glaser getting his second of the game at 11:50.
With the score an even 4-4 at the half Greensboro took the lead with a goal at 13:50 in the third period. Gleisner scored his second of the game to tie the score at 5-5 just a minute and a half later. But the Pride was able to put one more up before the end of the third to regain the lead.
The Captains came out strong in the fourth period and scored seven straight goals in the first seven minutes of the period to take a 12-6 lead. The Pride inched their way back into the game scoring five goals with their last being a goal with 41 second left in the game to pull within one goal of the Captains.
The Pride won the face-off after the goal but turned the ball over with 36 seconds left in the game to ensure a 12-11 CNU victory.
While Gleisner and Glaser led the scoring with four goals apiece, Walton and
Rob Koster also picked up a pair of goals and an assist each.
Andy McGregor played 59 minutes and 19 seconds for the Captains and made 11 saves.
Vince DeMario played the remaining 3 minutes and 41 seconds.
