NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Led by rookie Joey Manilla, the Captains won a pair of matches at home, taking a 9-0 shutout against Ferrum College and then a 6-1 win over Roanoke College in a rain-shortened match. CNU improved to 9-5 overall this season, 3-1 in the USA South. Manilla won all four matches he played in, including the match-clinching victories in both.

CNU started the day with a 9-0 blanking of Ferrum College, winning all three pro-set doubles matches. Dusty Nelson and Eric Shulman paired for an 8-2 win over Chris Miller and Joseph Jensen at No. 1 doubles and Matt King paired with Manilla for his first victory of the day, an 8-1 win over John Hartin and Darren Agee at the No. 2 slot.

Nelson would go on to take his first win at the No. 1 singles position, dropping Miller in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Manilla played in the No. 2 slot and beat Jensen, 6-2, 6-3. The Captains showcased depth against the Panthers, as Lorenzo Sison won at No. 3, Kyle Tobin at No. 4 and Robbie Wagner at No. 5, none of whom played in doubles for CNU.

In the second match of the day, the two teams played in singles action first as rain threatened the area. Jon Roy got Roanoke it's lone win of the afternoon, beating CNU's Garrett Widing in a tight 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 decision. The Captains, though, would answer with five straight wins in singles play, led by King at no. 2, Nelson at No. 3 and Manilla at No. 4. Manilla's victory over Graves, 6-2, 6-2, proved to be the match-clinching win for the Captains.

The two teams started doubles, with Manilla and King combining for an 8-1 win at No. 2, but the rain came and shut down the No. 1 and No. 3 matches as CNU was leading 7-3 and 7-6 respectively.

CNU will next host Shenandoah on Wednesday, April 6 in their final home conference match of the 2011 season.
