FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- In a match-up of two of the Atlantic South's top programs, it was host and the #5 team in the region Mary Washington that held on to win over #9 Christopher Newport University, 6-3. Gian Heyer and Garrett Widing each picked up huge wins over regionally ranked opponents in singles play, but the Eagles picked up the other four wins to seal the victory.

Heyer, ranked 17th in the Atlantic South region, was set to face off against Sam Wichlin, ranked #5 in the Atlantic South, at the top flight of singles play. The Captains junior made a big statement, dropping Wichlin 6-3, 6-0. Meanwhile, at the No. 2 spot, Widing took on Kaz Murata, ranked #11 in the region, and edged out the Eagle player 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

Murata teamed with Riley Baver to take down the Captains lone ranked doubles tandem in a matchup of the #4 and 5 ranked teams in the Atlantic South. CNU's Eric Shulman and Dusty Nelson took the Eagles pair to a tiebreaker, but suffered a 9-8 (8-1) loss.

Matthew King and Josef Manilla paired for the lone CNU victory in doubles, taking an 8-4 win at the No. 2 position.

CNU falls to 12-6 overall this season and will now travel to Burlington, North Carolina for the USA South Conference Tournament beginning Friday morning at 9:00 am. The Captains take on Greensboro College in the opening round.
