ROANOKE, Va. – The Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of Roanoke College on Sunday. The 13-12 loss drops the Captains to 7-1 on the year and improves Roanoke to 4-3.
Roanoke put the first goal on the board just over a minute into play but the Captains came back with two. After swapping goals Roanoke went one a three-goal run to take a 5-3 lead over the Captains.
CNU scored another pair to make it an even 5-5 but Roanoke scored five straight to take a 10-5 lead with 3:31 remaining in the first half. But the Captains fought back scoring three goals in the last minute and 14 seconds of the half to get back within two.
The Captains scored first in the second half and Roanoke answered right away maintaining their two goal lead. The two teams traded goals again taking the score to 12-10. With 4:45 remaining
Lauren King scored her first of the day off a free position shot to bring the Captains to within one.
Kaitlin Quigley scored her first of the game with 3:39 remaining to tie the game at 12 apiece.
But just under a minute later the Maroons scored to take the lead and the Captains weren't able to equalize before time expired.
Ashton Marshall led the team in goals with five, her second five-goal game this week.
Rachel Tomlinson scored four and led the team in caused turnovers with three.
Monica Evans had a team-high six ground balls and added two caused turnovers.
Hannah Wilkerson made 17 saves and allowed 13 goals.
The Captains return to action as they host N.C. Wesleyan on Saturday, March 26, at 1:00pm.
