NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team improved to 5-0 today with a 19-7 win over USA South opponent Greensboro College.
Ashton Marshall led the Captains with five goals.
The Captains won the first draw control of the game and took the ball down the field and scored just 11 seconds into the game.
Rachel Tomlinson got the goal with the assist coming from
Kaitlin Quigley. Marshall scored two of her goals in the next five minutes to put the Captains up 3-0 before the Pride found the net.
Greensboro scored two goals in a matter of minutes to pull within one before
Meghan Harkey put in her first of the game to make it 4-3.
Melissa Gallaher picked up her second and third goals of the game to tie the game at four apiece. The Captains and Pride traded goals until CNU pulled away with three goals to end the half with a 9-6 lead.
CNU came out in the second half determined to take advantage of their offensive opportunities and they did, scoring 10 straight goals to give them a 19-6 lead with just 6:24 left in the game. Greensboro was able to put one on the board with just 2:16 remaining to make it a 19-7 final score.
Marshall led with five goals and was followed by
Rachel Tomlinson with four goals and one assist and
Jessica Singer with three goals.
Becca Geist and Quigley led in assists with three each.
Tomlinson picked up a team-high seven ground balls and a team-high seven draw controls.
Morgan Layton led in caused turnovers with three.
Hannah Wilkerson made 10 saves and only allowed seven goals in the win.
The Captains outshot the Pride 37 to 21 and had 27 ground balls to their 17.
The game improves the Captains to 3-0 in the conference and 5-0 overall while the Pride drops to 0-1 in conference and 2-3 overall.
The Captains return to action as they host Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, March 16, at 7:00 pm.
