NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport's men's tennis team opened the 2011 season with a 9-0 home victory against Virginia Wesleyan on Friday. CNU followed the win up with a 0-9 setback against Div. I Old Dominion University.

Against the Marlins, senior co-captains Dusty Nelson and Lorenzo Sison combined for a doubles victory and won in singles for CNU, while eight other players combined to capture the Captains' other team points.

Rookie Joey Manilla and Matt King earned their first dual-match victories as Captains.

Chris Yost beat Donnie Greathouse 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6 and Kyle Tobin and Tom Whaling won in a doubles shutout. Robbie Wagner joined Yost for an exhibition doubles victory and won in singles.

Against the Monarchs, CNU junior Eric Shulman, ranked No. 4 nationally in a Division III, saw his first action of the spring season and took a set against ODU's No. 1 Tobias Fanselow, but fell 6-2, 3-6 (10-3).

Garrett Widing who won at No. 1 singles against Virginia Wesleyan, suffered a loss at No. 2 singles vs. Old Dominion 6-3, 6-0.
