NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport University men's basketball team will play host for the final two regular season games, starting Friday night as the Captains (15-8, 7-3) take on Methodist University (9-14, 4-6) in USA South action. The game is a part of a doubleheader with the women's team and will tip approximately 25 minutes after the conclusion of the first game, around 7:30 pm.
The Captains have been led by league-leading scorer
Conley Taylor, averaging 23.7 points per game this season and adding five rebounds per contest. Rookie star
Tra Benefield has also been tremendous, averaging nearly 16 points per game and a team-high 7.5 rebounds per contest. Senior
Mike Green, with just two regular season home games left in his career, comes in second on the team in scoring and rebounds with 15.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.
Methodist is getting double digit scoring from three players, as Mark Jernigan (14.8) Tanner Carnes (14.8) and Bryan Hockaday (11.0) lead the way for the Monarchs. Earlier this season, Christopher Newport escaped Fayetteville with a 3-point victory, in one of the closest games all season for Methodist. Terrell Stallings led for Methodist, scoring 22 points.
