NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – In his second career start, junior quarterback Aaron Edwards had another impressive day under center, throwing for the third most yards in CNU history as the Captains blew past Maryville College, 45-20. The Captains cap an undefeated USA South season for their second outright conference championship in school history.
 
Maryville took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter when Andrew Noboa knocked home a 20-yard field goal, but the Captains took over after that, scoring four straight touchdowns to take a 28-3 lead halfway through the second quarter.

A record-setting performance from junior quarterback Aaron Edwards in just his second career start led the way. Edwards connected for 4-, 48- and 74-yard touchdown passes en route to 245 yards passing in the first half. He hooked up with senior Antonio Epps with 3:57 remaining in the first quarter before the long bomb to rookie Rudy Rudolph with 13:24 showing in the second quarter.

After freshman running back Marcus Morrast scored on a 10-yard scamper at the 9:37 mark, it was tight end Chris Coiner off to the races on the first play of a CNU drive, scoring a 74-yard touchdown with 7:40 remaining in the first half.
Maryville ended the run on their next possession, as Travis Felder found the endzone on a 3-yard run off tackle to his right to cut the lead to 28-10. CNU tacked on a 26-yard field goal by Stephen Denuel at the end of the half for the score at the break, 31-10.

Edwards was 14-of-18 through the air in the first half with three touchdowns, while sophomore running back Evan Moog rushed for 63 yards on 12 carries.

In the second half, the Captains continued to impress through the air, as Chris Coiner posted one of the most impressive days in school history yardage-wise. The tight end finished the day with four catches for 157 yards and the touchdown.

CNU scored on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Morrast to Rudolph for his second score of the day and then again on a two-yard carry by Moog late in the fourth quarter. CNU led  45-13 before the Scots could add a late-game touchdown on a Wesley Idlette catch from back-up QB Tim Conner.

Edwards posted with the third most passing yards in a game in program history, finishing the day with 314 yards through the air. He completed 17-of-24 with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Moog led the team's ground attack with 93 yards on 21 carries.

Defensively, senior Mike King led the way in his final regular season home game, with 11 total tackles. Classmate Dayn Washburn added eight tackles including 1.5 sacks.
