NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University field hockey team improved to 6-3 with a dominating 9-1 win over Shenandoah University. Junior Caitlin Cahill had the game winner for CNU.

It took the Captains just seven minutes to start scoring and they kept it up for the rest of the game. Cahill scored her first goal at 6:46 into the game. Just eight minutes later Cahill struck again off a pass from sophomore Marlene Lichty.

Less than a minute later the Captains took a 3-0 lead with a goal from sophomore Marcy Hoath, her first of the year. The assist on Hoath's goal went to senior Paige Childers.

At 15:38 freshman Lauren Cheatham dished the ball to freshman Belle Tunstall who knocked in her first goal of the season for a 4-0 Captains lead.

Just before the end of the half sophomore Meghan Sullivan put away her first goal of the game off a pass from Lindsay Hendricks. The next two goals came from Cheatham with an assist from Tunstall on the second for a 7-0 Captains lead with 25 minutes left on the clock.

Tunstall scored her second of the game just two minutes later after collecting the ball off the goalie's pads from a Cahill shot to knock it in.

Shenandoah scored their lone goals of the game at 57:18 as Liz Grover passed the ball to Megan Garrett who was able to sneak it by Captains' goalkeeper Caitlin Colletti.

CNU answered with another goal from Sullivan off a pass from senior Lauren Cherry. The 9-1 score held to the end of the game.

CNU outshot Shenandoah 25 to four and had 13 corners to Shenandoah's one. CNU goalkeepers Jamie Dowling and Julie Collins each had a save.

The Captains improved to 6-3 with the win while the Hornets dropped to 3-11.

CNU returns to the field on Wednesday, October 12, as they host Eastern Mennonite University. Game time is slated for 6:00 pm.
