ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- The second-ranked Christopher Newport University Captains men's soccer team improved to 9-0-1 overall this season after taking a 4-1 victory on the road Wednesday, at St. Mary's College (Md.) (5-6).
CNU got on the board quickly when freshman
Jalon Brown (Yorktown, Va.) scored in the 6th minute of action. Brown collected a second ball and slipped a low shot into the right side of the goal.
The Captains held the 1-0 advantage for the remainder of the half, outshooting the home team 7-3. The CNU defense allowed just one shot on-frame, stopped by senior goalkeeper

In the second half, the Captains offense surged into gear, scoring three more goals led by senior scoring leader
Brian Lybert (Honolulu, Hawaii). Lybert added to his team-high scoring total with a goal and an assist in the second half, including the helper on the eventual game-winner by
Andrew Bonorden (Yorktown, Va.).
Christopher Newport allowed just one goal in the game, a penalty kick score in the 63rd minute. Brian Payne connected on the PK, but the Captains answered with two more insurance goals in the next 11 minutes.
Lybert's unassisted tally in the 66th minute was followed by Brown's second goal of the game in the 74th minute. CNU outshot St. Mary's (Md.) 22-8 in the game, including a 15-5 edge in the second half.
Lybert led the way with five shots, three on-goal for the Captains, while Bonorden and Brown each had two shots on-frame. Payne and Drew Gainey each had a shot on-goal for the Seahawks.
CNU will return home for a 1:00 pm kickoff this Saturday, October 8 vs. Rutgers-Newark.
