NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Senior goalkeeper Justin Wolfe (Williamsburg, Va.) stopped six shots and the Captains scored twice in the first half to shoot past Mary Washington (7-6-3) for a 2-0 shutout victory. The Senior Night win improved the second-ranked CNU squad to 14-0-1 overall this season.

In other action, the Greensboro Pride suffered a 3-0 loss to Methodist clinching the regular season championship for CNU. The Captains will be the top seed in next week's USA South Tournament.

In fitting manner, it was a senior that scored the gamewinner in his final regular season home game, when Steven Farmer scored his third goal in the last two games. Just shy of the 17th minute of action, Farmer touched in the go-ahead goal off a header assist from Caleb Lewis.

Lewis posted his second helper on the year while Farmer collected his career-high fifth goal of the season.

CNU added a second goal in the 40th minute when reserve forwards Alex Makumbi and Andrew Bonorden connected for the goal. Makumbi sent a hard cross from the right side and the goalkeeper could not corral the pass, leaving Bonorden open back post for the score.

CNU outshot the Eagles 10-5 in the first half, but Mary Washington ratcheted up the pressure after suffering the 2-0 deficit. Both teams pushed offensively the rest of the way, putting eight shots on-goal and testing both defenses.

Wolfe stepped up for the Captains, making six saves, including four in the second half. Nick Shepherd had the best chance for Mary Washington, taking a free kick from about 25 yards out. He turned a hard low shot around the defensive wall near post, but Wolfe made a diving save to preserve the shutout.

Wolfe now has eight shutouts on the season and 27 for his career, just three shy of the all-time record.

Christopher Newport will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, when they travel to Greensboro College for the final USA South game of the season. CNU takes on the Pride at 3:30 pm in North Carolina.
