NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport University field hockey team traveled to Frostburg, Md. today to finish the game against Frostburg State that was suspended due to weather at Captains Field on September 30. They were able to score three more goals for a 10-0 win.
On September 30, it took the Captains a few minutes to begin the scoring but once they started the goals came one after another. CNU junior
Caitlin Cahill put the Captains on the board 12 minutes into the contest and was followed just 13 seconds later with a goal from freshman
Lauren Cheatham off a pass from senior
Paige Childers.
Just 30 seconds later Cahill notched her second goal of the game on an unassisted shot past Frostburg goalkeeper Maggie Edwards. The Captains earned a corner at the 18 minutes mark and Cahill received the injection and passed the ball in to sophomore
Shelby Judkins who spun, took a shot and scored.
Two minutes later Cheatham scored her second goal of the game followed five minutes later with another goal from Judkins. With seven minutes remaining in the first half sophomore
Meghan Sullivan scored an unassisted goal to give the Captains a 7-0 lead that remained until halftime.
As the rain picked up the two teams took a five minute halftime and quickly began the second half. But just two minutes into the half the rain started to collect on the field and as lightening struck again the game was suspended.
CNU made the trip to Frostburg to finish the game and just four minutes into play the Captains put their eighth goal on the board. Senior
Lauren Cherry passed the ball in front of the cage for freshman
Taylor Young who knocked in her first goal of the season.
At the 54 minute-mark Cheatham scored her third goal of the game off a pass from Judkins. Sophomore
Kelsey Clark followed two minutes later with the Captains' final goal sealing the 10-0 victory.
All three goalkeepers for the Captains saw action throughout the game with sophomore
Julie Collins picking up four saves.
The Captains outshot the Bobcats 34-5 and had 10 corners to their three.
CNU is now officially 10-3 and they return to the field on Sunday, October 23, in a game against Haverford. Game time is set for 1:00pm.
