NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- With a 3-0 win at Captains Field on Saturday night, the second-ranked CNU men's soccer team (12-0-1, 4-0-0) became the first team to shut out Methodist University (8-3-2, 2-1-0) this season.

Methodist came into the game averaging 2.42 goals per game and nearly 15 shots per contest, but the Captains defense managed to hold MU to just eight shots, two on-frame.

CNU got on the board first, as a defensive miscue from Methodist gave CNU a 1-0 lead with an own goal in the eighth minute of action.  A through ball meant for senior Brian Lybert went long and the Methodist defender flicked it backward over the keepers head into the goal.

The Monarchs would ratchet up the pressure and created several chances in the first half, but could not break through despite four corner kicks.

It was instead the Captains that added a second goal in the 34th minute of action on just their second shot of the game. Midfielder Michael Breske slipped a pass through the defense to Lybert, leaving him open on the right side of the box. He took the hard shot to the left side of the goal for his 10th score of the season.

With a comfortable 2-0 lead at halftime, the Captains would add an insurance goal in the 69th minute of play when reserve Andrew Bonorden scored his fourth goal of the season. Bonorden had the ball at the top of the box and got by two defenders to his left before lacing a hard low shot into the right side of the goal.

CNU held on for the seventh clean sheet of the season and the sixth solo shutout for senior goalkeeper Justin Wolfe. He made two saves in the game to preserve the shutout.

Christopher Newport was led by Lybert and Bonorden, each taking two shots with one goal. Eirik Nordseth and Eric McGinnis each took two shots for the Monarchs.

The #2/3 Captains return to action this Wednesday, October 19 versus Shenandoah University is USA South action. The game is a make-up from a rainout earlier this season and will kickoff at 7:00 pm.
