NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Freeman Center will play host to USA South action tonight as both the men's and women's basketball teams will host Shenandoah University. The 6th ranked women's squad will tip-off against Shenandoah at 5:30 pm to round out the season series against the Hornets and the men will go at 7:30 pm in their first conference game of the year.
The 6th ranked Captains have raced out to a 9-1 start this season and currently boast the longest active home court winning streak at 28 games. The active streak is third to only UCONN (69) and Stanford (52) at any level of NCAA play and is the 14th best streak in the history of Division III.
Leading the charge for CNU is senior All-American guard
Chelsie Schweers, who ranks second in the nation in scoring at 25.1 points per game. She has led the Captains in scoring in all but one game this season and has helped the Captains to a 3-0 start in USA South play.
The Shenandoah women gave CNU a run earlier this season in Winchester, as the Captains won 74-62 led by
Lauren Gural's double-double. The Hornets have been led this season by Sierra Edwards with 11.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. Shenandoah is 4-6 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
On the men's side, CNU has hit a small run, winning three of the last four games including the Captains Shootout Championship over winter break. Tournament MVP
Conley Taylor led the way and currently ranks ninth in the nation with 23.3 points per game. Rookie
Tra Benefield has been stellar out of the gates and ranks second on the team in scoring with 16.5 points, while leading the team on the glass with 7.3 boards per game.
The Shenandoah men have struggled to a 1-9 start this season heading into the league opener tonight, but have played stiff competition, including Division I William & Mary. Four players are in double figures for the Hornets, led by Mitch Dudley who is averaging a double-double so far this season (15.5 points, 10.8 rebounds).
