NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The #1 men's soccer team in the nation, the Christopher Newport University men's soccer team, will put their top ranking on the line this weekend with a pair of games in San Antonio, Texas. CNU will face Southwestern University on Friday night at 6 pm (EST) in a neutral site game and will then take on 6th ranked and host Trinity University on Saturday at 8:30 pm (EST).
The Captains found themselves as the top team in the nation for the third week in program history, after a pair last season. CNU ranks 15th in the nation in both total offense (3.38 goals/game) and scoring defense (0.38 goals against average).
Junior
Brian Lybert (Honolulu, Hawaii) leads the potent attack, ranking fourth in the nation in assists per game (0.88) and junior goalkeeper
Justin Wolfe (Williamsburg, Va.) is at the helm of the stingy defense, ranking 20th in the nation with a 0.383 goals against average.
The Captains have played in just one game in the last 12 days, because of a recent rainout vs. Virginia Wesleyan. The team has raced out to an 8-0-0 start heading into this weekend.
The Friday night opponent, Southwestern, has started 4-3-0 this season. The Pirates have been led by Alex Keller, with three goals and a pair of assists for a total of eight points. The all-time series favors CNU, 3-0, as the Captains have won all three matchups against Southwestern. The last time the two teams played was in 2008, when CNU posted a 3-1 win on the road.
CNU's biggest challenge of 2010 will come on Saturday night, as they face the 6th ranked Trinity Tigers. Trinity is 7-1-0 so far this season, with a loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor earlier this year. Trinity boasts one of the top offenses in the nation, ranking fifth overall with 3.75 goals per game. Cameron Hogsett leads the way, ranking #1 in the nation in assists per game, with 1.14 per game.
