NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The CNU women's soccer team (3-4-1) opened USA South regular season action tonight with a 3-2 come-from-behind victory against Averett University (4-2-0). The Captains scored a pair of second-half goals including the gamewinner from senior Lauren Fleming (Burke, Va.) in the 76th minute for the win.

Kendall Dishaw (Salem, Va.) and Sam Ciaravino (Burke, Va.) also scored for the Captains, while Ciaravino added an assist to lead CNU.

The Captains dominated the attack for the bulk of the match, but Averett made their one early shot count, going up 1-0 after just 14:58 as Sandra Johansson scored her first goal of the season. Johansson collected a ball that was blocked by the defense, and beat her defender to get one-on-one with CNU keeper Meghan Gumbs.

CNU answered before halftime, to try and swing the momentum back, as Dishaw connected on a one-timer after Ciaravino's shot was blocked by a defender. Dani Gunderson had the initial cross that started the play.

Averett would again take the lead in the 60th minute, as Camilla Sjoren sent a long pass to Pernilla Milton on the right side. Milton would send a cross past Gumbs right back to Sjoren, who put it in for the score.

The Captains leading scorer, Ciaravino, would add her fifth goal of the season in the 69th minute to notch the equalizer. Chelsea Brown had the assist, with a touch pass in the box just beyond Ciaravino's defender on the right side. The senior midfielder had a dribble toward the keeper and then laced a hard shot into the top of the goal.

CNU would get the winner just under seven minutes later, as the Averett goalkeeper misplayed a long pass back, that bounded over her head and toward the right post. Fleming was their to clean it up for the goal and the eventual gamewinner.

The Captains outshot Averett 18-4, including putting 10 shots on-frame. The Cougars had just four shots in the game, but put three on-goal with one each from Johansson, Sjoren and Maliha Ataulla.

USA South action continues for the Captains on Sunday, as they host Ferrum College at 1 pm.
