NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's soccer team (2-4-1) will open USA South action this weekend, as they host Averett University (4-1) on Saturday afternoon at 4 pm and Ferrum College (6-1) on Sunday at 1 pm.
CNU is coming off a league championship in 2009 and will be looking to repeat in 2010. The Captains were the preseason favorites according to a vote of league head coaches. So far this season, CNU has faced a tough schedule, including #1 Messiah, and have gone 2-4-1 so far. The Captains are coming off a scoreless draw vs. Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday night, led by sophomore goalkeeper
Meghan Gumbs with her second shutout.
Averett will come to Newport News after a 4-1 start, but the Cougars have never beaten the Captains. CNU owns a 14-0 advantage in the all-time series. This season, the young squad has been terrific defensively, allowing just one goal per game and starting goalkeeper Samantha Lupo boasts a 0.69 goals against average. Kick-off is set for 4:00 pm Saturday as the opening game of a doubleheader with the two men's teams.
On Sunday, CNU will take on the Ferrum Panthers (6-1) at 1 pm. Ferrum has allowed only four goals in seven games this season, while averaging over two per game offensively. LaQuinta Garrett leads the way with 10 points, scoring four goals and adding a pair of assists. Kick-off will be 1:00 pm on Sunday at Captains Field and live stats will be available at www.sidearmstats.com/cnu/wsoc.
