ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Christopher Newport University volleyball team traveled to N.C. Wesleyan in their fifth USA South Conference match of the year. The Captains dropped the first set but won the next three to seal the victory.
Set scores for the night were 23-25, 25-18, 25-17 and 25-13.
The first set loss was the Captains' first loss since their match with #2 Juniata on September 3. “N.C. Wesleyan played an excellent match,” said CNU Head Coach
Lindsay Birch. “They presented us with a very difficult challenge tonight. Coach Pietryk really prepared her kids and had them ready for the match. Their libero, Kelly George, was outstanding tonight.” George had 31 digs and a service ace for the Battling Bishops.
Leading the Captains in kills was
Caitlyn Jansen (Lorton, Va.) with 17, followed by
Cory Harris (Williamsburg, Va.) with 16. Jansen had a team-high hitting percentage of .522 and totaled three blocks.
Jessie Heavenrich (Cambria, Calif.) had 39 assists for the Captains and added 15 digs. Leading the team in digs was
Abby Hogge (Clifton, Va.) with 20.
Meredith Smith had a match-high nine kills for the Battling Bishops.
Mackenzie Tingle had 19 assists, 10 digs and four service aces.
Anna Hart had 3 blocks for NCWC and also tallied two kills and 10 digs.
The Captains travel to Ferrum, Va. this weekend to take on both Ferrum College and Averett University on Saturday, September 25.
