Brianna Milne Goal Lifts #8 CNU Past #15 Lynchburg College, 1-0

The Captains get their third shutout of the season

Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University field hockey team continued in their winning ways gaining another shutout against #15 Lynchburg College, 1-0. The win improves the Captains to 5-1 and drops the Hornets to 3-2.

The Captains and Hornets faced off at Captains Field in their eleventh all-time matchup. The Hornets are still ahead in the series 5-6 but the Captains have been steadily gaining ground with wins in the last five years.

Play went back and forth throughout the first half with CNU getting off 11 shots and Lynchburg only having nine. But Lynchburg was awarded more penalty corners with eight to CNU's two. Neither team was able to put anything in the net as CNU goalkeeper Brittany Bradsher (Hampton, Va.) had eight saves and Lynchburg goalkeeper Tiffany Frye had seven.

The Captains fought through 46 fouls from the Hornets and were able to break the 0-0 tie with a goal from junior defender Brianna Milne (Virginia Beach, Va.) at 60:37. The Captains were awarded a penalty corner and Milne grabbed the rebound from the goalkeeper's pads and put the ball into the back of the cage. This was Milne's first goal of the season.

The Captains stayed composed and held the lead to get their fifth win of the season.

Bradsher had a season-high 14 saves and didn't allow a goal for her third shutout of the year.

CNU returns to action tomorrow against Frostburg State at Captains Field. Game time is set for 1:00pm.
