Field Hockey Takes Down Stevenson 6-1

Five Captains score as CNU defeats Stevenson 6-1 in Virginia Beach

Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Christopher Newport University field hockey team finishes a weekend sweep with a 6-1 victory over Stevenson University. The Captains are now 4-1 on the year and Stevenson is 4-2.

Sophomore Chrissy Kurecki (Richmond, Va.) got the scoring started for the Captains 15 minutes into the game. Just nine minutes later she received a pass from sophomore Caitlin Cahill (Virginia Beach, Va.), dribbled to the end line in the circle and passed the ball back to Cahill who gathered it and put it between the goalkeeper and the near post giving the Captains a 2-0 lead. The score remained 2-0 into the second half.

Five minutes into the second half the Captains were awarded their second penalty stroke in as many days. Sophomore Sarah Wister (Yorktown, Va.) was chosen by the CNU coaching staff to take the stroke after a successful attempt the day before against McDaniel. With similar form, Wister hit the backboard putting the Captains up by three.

Stevenson held off the Captains for 15 more minutes until they went on a three-goal stint in just three minutes of play. The first came from a shot from the top of the circle, by junior Paige Childers (Virginia Beach, Va.), that was touched past the goalkeeper and into the back of the cage by freshman Shelby Judkins (Hampton, Va.) who had entered the game just ten minutes prior. Just a minute later sophomore Lindsay Hendricks (Chesapeake, Va.) took another shot from the top of the circle that was again tipped by Judkins into the net putting the Captains up by five.

The Captains dribbled down the field just a minute after their fifth goal and were awarded a penalty corner where sophomore Breanne Lowe (Suffolk, Va.) passed the ball 10 yards into the circle to senior Katelyn Yandle (Portsmouth, Va.) who took a shot and scored her fourth goal of the season.

Not ten seconds later the Mustangs got their only goal of the game from Jorden Haney off a pass from Katelyn Manocheh.

This is the second meeting between the Mustangs and the Captains with the Captains now leading the series 2-0.

The Captains return to action against Lynchburg College at Captains Field on Saturday, September 18. Game time is set for 2:00 pm.
