VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The third-ranked CNU men's soccer team (5-0-0) extended their season-opening win streak to five games with a 3-1 victory over Kean University (2-2-1) in the 2010 Chick-Fil-A Invitational at Virginia Wesleyan College.
Brian Lybert (Honolulu, Hi.) concluded a terrific tournament, scoring two goals including the gamewinner for CNU. After a three-assist game on Friday night, Lybert came out firing on Saturday, taking 10 shots and putting seven of them on-frame for the Captains, including the two goals.
The Captains got on the board just 7:56 into the game as defender
Kyle Rose (Charlottesville, Va.) headed in an unassisted score on the right side. Lybert's first goal would come just nine minutes later, off an assist from
Danny Franklin (Williamsburg, Va.).
Kean would get on the board to cut the lead to one, just before halftime. Tiago Goetzke posted an unassisted goal into the left corner with 1:05 remaining in the first half. It was just the second goal allowed by CNU junior goalkeeper
Justin Wolfe (Williamsburg, Va.) this season.
The #3 Captains would add an insurance goal late in the second half, as Lybert notched his second in the 85th minute. CNU peppered the Kean goalkeeper with chances, as Tyler Callahan was forced to make 13 saves against the Captains. CNU outshot Kean 29-5 in the game, while putting 16 shots on-goal.
The Captains return home next week as they face Marietta College and Penn State-Altoona in the 2010 Joe Pombriant/CNU Classic. The game against Marietta will be Friday, September 17 at 7:00 pm.
