SALISBURY, Md. – The Christopher Newport University football squad surrendered eight touchdowns and a safety Saturday night in a 58-10 non-conference loss at Salisbury University. The Captains, 0-2, gave up the most points in CNU football history in the 48-point loss.
“We didn't do anything well offensively or defensively tonight,” head coach
Matt Kelchner said. “We have to re-evaluate where we are as a football team and we don't have much time to do it.”
The Seagulls, 2-0, scored touchdowns on their first 6 possessions. Sophomore quarterback Dan Griffin scored three rushing touchdowns and finished with 153 yards on 17 carries.
The Captains only touchdown of the game came in the 3rd quarter on a 2-yard scoring run by
Keith Gaines (Roanoke, Va.). CNU's other score came in the 2nd quarter on a 37-yard field goal from freshman
Ryan Trotman (Chesapeake, Va.).
“I felt we had good practices this week on Wednesday and Thursday,” Kelchner continued. “Obviously, we were out-played and have a lot of work to do.”
The Captains travel to Frostburg, Md. Saturday for their final non-conference game of the season. They will take on the Bobcats of Frostburg State, 0-2, for the first time ever. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
