VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The third-ranked Captains of Christopher Newport made quick work of regionally ranked Rowan (3-1-1), dropping the Profs, 5-0, on the first day of Virginia Wesleyan's Chick-Fil-A Invitational. CNU's leading scorer, rookie Alex Makumbi (Kampala, Uganda) scored two more for the Captains, while Andrew Bonorden (Yorktown, Va.) also added a pair.

Christopher Newport impved to 4-0-0 so far this season, notching the third shutout of the year in the win against Rowan. The Captains defense, led by the starting corps of juniors David Haas (Newport News, Va.), Trevor Moyer (Suffolk, Va.) and sophomores Kyle Rose (Charlottesville, Va.) and Sean Moriarty (Yorktown, Va.), allowed just two shots in the contest, neither on-goal.

Bonorden notched his first, the eventual gamewinner, of the 2010 campaign in the first half off an assist by junior Brian Lybert (Honolulu, Hawaii). Lybert would have the helper on each of the first three goals scored by CNU in the game, bringing his season total to five on the season.

Offensively, the Captains put on a showcase in the second half. With a 1-0 lead, CNU came out of the break on fire, scoring four goals in a span of just over 10 minutes. The barrage was started on a goal by Steven Farmer, followed quickly by Bonorden's second strike in the 57th minute. On the ensuing kick-off, the Captains pressed again as Makumbi notched his first of the night just 36 seconds later on a header from the left side.

Two minutes later, Makumbi would round out the Captains scoring with a run on the right side, scoring an unassisted goal in the 59th minute.

Rowan goalkeepers Charlie Cunliffe and Michael Fanz-Huster combined for 10 saves in the game to lead the way for the Profs. 

CNU will return to the pitch on Saturday at 5:00 pm, as they take on Kean University on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan.
