Two Goals Each by Cahill and Yandle Lift the Captains Over Randolph-Macon, 5-1

Captains start the season 1-0 with a win over Randolph-Macon College

Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Sophomore Caitlin Cahill (Virginia Beach, Va.) and senior Katelyn Yandle (Portsmouth, Va.) both scored two goals as CNU beat Randolph-Macon 5-1 in the season opener for each team. 

CNU got things started quick earning a penalty corner just 1:41 into the game. Four shots later midfielder Cahill brought the ball to the top of the circle and ripped a shot into the back of the goal giving CNU the lead 1-0 at 7:27. Just six seconds later Randolph-Macon answered with a one-touch shot and goal from Mikalea Rumley off a pass from Lauren Seal.

Play went back and forth until Cahill scored again off a shot from the top of the circle giving the Captains a 2-1 lead at 21:38 in the first half. The next two goals came during penalty corners from CNU defender Yandle at 54:36 and 63:15.

CNU freshman Meghan Sullivan (Alexandria, Va.) came off the bench to score CNU's last goal of the game off a pass to the post from senior Emma Mehrabi (Fredericksburg, Va.).

“Their keeper made some great saves but our returners were resilient and kept pressing and were finally able to break through with some goals. I'm really proud of them and how hard they worked,” said CNU head coach Carrie Moura.

The Captains took a total of 40 shots to Randolph-Macon's seven. Randolph-Macon goalkeeper Nicole Woodworth had an incredible 27 saves. CNU had 15 penalty corners while Randolph-Macon had three.

The Captains return to action on Sunday, September 5, at 12:00 pm as they host Rhodes College at Captains Field.
