Women’s Lacrosse Falls at #17 Catholic in NCAA Play

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team dropped a first round NCAA tournament match today 19-9 at Catholic University of America, the 17th ranked team in the country. The Captains end the season with a 13-7 record and an appearance in the NCAA tournament for the fifth consecutive year.

The Catholic Cardinals jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before senior Natalie Gilbert got CNU on the board with 19:19 remaining in the first half. Junior Kaitlin Quigley got her first of a team high five goals less than a minute later to bring the score to 3-2, the closest the Captains would get the rest of the day. Quigley's five goals set a new school record with 76 goals during the season, breaking Kristen Conques' mark of 63 during the 2006 campaign. 

Freshman Rachel Tomlinson and junior Meghan Harkey added first half goals during a stretch in which  Catholic would score 10 more goals and take a 13-4 lead into the locker room at the half. 

Catholic outscored the Captains 6-5 during the second half of action when Quigley added four of CNU's five second half goals. Harkey added the final goal for the Captains too make the final margin 19-9. The Captains conclude their season tying a school record with 13 wins for the third straight year.
