Men’s Lacrosse Suffers Tough Loss to Virginia Wesleyan, 7-5

Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The CNU men's lacrosse team dropped the last home game of the season to Virginia Wesleyan, 7-5, under the lights at Captains Field.

CNU dominated the first period of play with a total of 17 shots to Virginia Wesleyan's eight. The Captains unleashed 13 shots before Britt Hoover found the back of the net off a pass from Zach Hill with 2:45 left in the period. Just two and a half minutes later Hill and Hoover struck again making it 2-0 at the end of the first period.

After a quick faceoff win by Ari Elgort the Captains moved down the field and John Glaser fired a scoring shot just nine seconds into the second period to give the Captains a 3-0 lead. Freshman goalkeeper, Andy McGregor tallied seven impressive saves before Virginia Wesleyan got their first goal at 10:07 in the second period. The Marlins put one more on the board making it 3-2 at halftime.

While Virginia Wesleyan seemed to gain momentum in the third period taking a total of 19 shots, McGregor kept the Captains in the game, allowing only one goal and adding 5 saves. Ray Fitzgerald scored for the Captains at 6:22.

CNU held the lead into the fourth period until Curran Lee scored for the Marlins at 11:35. Under a minute later the Marlins took the lead 5-4 with a goal from Kyle Wright. The Captains took advantage of a man-up opportunity and evened the score at five with a goal from Hill. The score remained tied until Virginia Wesleyan scored with 1:43 remaining in the game to take the lead. The Marlins added another goal with just two seconds left in the game to make the final score 7-5.

McGregor had a stellar performance in the goal for the Captains. His 19 saves on the night gives him a record-breaking 155 on the season. The previous record for saves in a season was set by Tyler Jackson in 2009.

The loss drops the Captains to 7-8 on the season while improving Virginia Wesleyan to 8-7.

The Captains return to action next Saturday, May 1, for their last game of the season at St. Mary's College of Maryland.
