Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - CNU unleashed a 16-hit attack and routed No. 18 Salisbury, 14-1, in a Thursday baseball game at Captains Park.
After two scoreless innings, the Captains opened the third with four consecutive hits, scoring three runs.
Shannon Mark doubled, followed by RBI singles by
Drue Vernon,
Luke Saunders and
Parker Neal.
CNU then tacked on four more in the fourth when Mike Romett doubled,
Shayne Kersey reached on a fielders choice and a
Connor Madden single loaded the bases. Mark singled and Vernon was hit by a pitch for the first two runs. Saunders drove in another with a sacrifice fly and Neal the fourth with a ground ball.
The Captains then added two more in the fifth and one in the seventh after
Ben Lenda led off with a triple and scored on Madden's single.
CNU then finished the scoring on a three-run homer by Mike Romett in the eighth.
Four CNU players had three hits each. Mark and Lenda were each 3-5 with an RBI, while Madden was 3-5 with two RBIs and Romett 3-4 with three RBIs. Saunders also had two hits and two RBIs.
Sean Chitsaz went eight innings, scattering five hits, winning his fourth straight game and improving to 7-2 on the year.
The win improves CNU to 24-14, while Salisbury is 24-9. The Captains visit the Seagulls Friday at 3 p.m. before closing the regular season at York (Pa.) Saturday in a doubleheader.
