Shenandoah Stymies Baseball's Hopes in Championship Game, 7-4

Box Score   BURLINGTON, N.C. - Shenandoah ended the CNU baseball team's hopes of fighting through the losers' bracket to a tournament championship with a 7-4 win Sunday afternoon.
The Captains had forced a winner-take-all game by beating the Hornets, 5-4, earlier in the day.
But in the ultimate championship contest the Hornets built a 7-0 lead after six innings and then held off a CNU comeback bid.
In the seventh, the Captains scored twice. Shannon Mark was hit by a pitch with one out and the bases loaded to drive in Ben Lenda. After a pitching change Drue Vernon was hit by a pitch, scoring Mike Romett. But the Hornets retired the next two hitters, ending the threat.
In the ninth, Connor Madden scored on one of four Shenandoah errors in the game and then Shannon Mark scored on a Luke Saunders groundout, but CNU could not add any more.
Parker Neal was the only Captain with more than one hit.
CNU placed four players on the all-tournament team, pitcher Josh Brinkman, third baseman Luke Saunders, catcher Ben Lenda and outfielder Connor Madden.
The Captains, now 22-14, continue their season Tuesday when they visit St. Mary's and Thursday when they host Salisbury at 3:00.
