Box Score BURLINGTON, N.C. - Needing two win two games to claim the USA South championship, the CNU baseball team got halfway there with a 5-4 win over Shenandoah Sunday afternoon. The Captains will take on the Hornets again at about 4 p.m.
Pitching on just two days rest,
Josh Brinkman limited Shenandoah to just three runs in seven innings, as CNU built a 5-3 lead.
Chris Malvagna then shut the door with his fifth save of the year.
CNU scored in the first inning when
Shannon Mark led off with a single and moved to third on
Luke Saunders' double. Mark scored on a ground ball by
Parker Neal.
The Captains got another run in the second when Mike Romett singled and eventually came home on a base hit by
Drue Vernon.
After Shenandoah got one back in the third, CNU made it 4-1 with two in the fifth. on a two-run homer by
Ben Lenda, his sixth of the season.
The Hornets closed the margin to 4-3 with single runs in the fifth and seventh innings, but CNU got a huge insurance run in the eighth.
Connor Madden singled, moved to second on a ground ball and came across on a base hit by Neal.
Madden finished with three hits, while Neal, Lenda and Romett had two each of the Captains 14 hits.
Brinkman got the win, making him 7-3 on the year.
