William & Mary Slips Past Baseball, 4-1

Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William & Mary scored twice each in the third and fourth innings and scored a 4-1 win over Christopher Newport in a hastily-arranged baseball game at Plumeri Park Tuesday night.

Knowing each had room on its schedule for an additional game, CNU's John Harvell and the Tribe's Frank Leoni set up the game Monday which was played on a cold and damp night Tuesday.

The Captains got on the scoreboard in the first when Drue Vernon walked, stole second and was driven in by Luke Saunders.

W&M took the lead in the third when Derek Lowe doubled, moved to third on a single by Ryan Brown on which CNU's Vernon and Shayne Kersey collided chasing a popup in short right-center field and scored on a wild pitch. Brown then came home on a base hit by Tadd Bower.

In the fourth, with runners on first and third and two out, Lowe hit a checked-swing roller to third. Saunders made a bare-handed play on the ball, but his throw to first got past the bag and both runners scored.

CNU pitching then blanked the Tribe the rest of the way. Six pitchers combined to strike out seven William & Mary hitters. Catcher Ben Lenda threw out all three Tribe runners who attempted to steal on him.

William & Mary is now 18-14 on the year. CNU is 18-12 and faces Ferrum at 9:30 Thursday in the first game of the USA South Tournament in Burlington, N.C.
