SWEEP!! - Men's Basketball Gives CNU 2-2 Championships With 67-63 Win Over N.C. Wesleyan

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The CNU men made it a 2-2 sweep of USA South basketball championships, adding their title in a 67-63 victory over No. 1 seeded N.C. Wesleyan after the CNU women claimed their own title earlier.

CNU will advance to the NCAA Tournament by virtue of the automatic bid they receive as USA South champions.  It is CNU's 13th conference title and 17th NCAA appearance.

The Captains survived an epic battle with the Bishops, grabbing the lead with 1:27 to play on a huge three-pointer from the corner by Brian Hermann, making the score 64-61. Alex Murray pulled the Bishops back to within one with a layup at the 36 second mark. After a CNU turnover, Jarmel Arrington missed a jumper for NCW and the Bishops fouled Conley Taylor with 12 seconds remaining. He missed the front end of a 1-1, but Mark Blasingame grabbed the offensive rebound.

Down 64-63, the Bishops fouled Taylor again. He made the first shot, missed the second and grabbed his own rebound. He was again fouled with 1.7 seconds remaining, hitting both to seal the victory.

Taylor led CNU with 17 points and had eight rebounds. Blasingame scored 13, added ten rebounds and blocked four shots. Hermann added 12 points and Mike Green had ten.

Blasingame was named MVP and joined on the all-tournament team by Hermann and Taylor. Also chosen were Trey Drake and Alphonso Frazier of N.C. Wesleyan and Kenny Robertson of Shenandoah.

N.C. Wesleyan had won 11 in a row, and closes its year at 16-10.

CNU is 15-12 and will learn its NCAA assignment Monday morning on a video presentation on ncaasports.com at 10 a.m.
