Greensboro, NC - The CNU men's basketball team withstood a spirited defensive effort by the home standing Greensboro Pride and earned a 70-68 overtime victory in Hanes Gymnasium. The victory improved CNU t0 11-12 on the season and was the fifth overtime contest the Captains have played this season.
Despite shooting only 38.5% from the field andd 25% from beyond the arc, the Captains survived 11 lead changes and never led by more than eight points.
Conley Taylor (Newport News, VA) led all scorers with 21 points and was joined in double figures by senior
Mark Blasingame (Roanoke Rapids, NC) who had 11 points and 14 rebounds, sophomore
Brian Herrmann (Newport News, VA) with 10 points and 9 rebounds and freshman
Xavier Parham (Richmond, VA) with 10 points.
The Captains held a 27-24 lead at the half but the Pride put a quick run together to open the second half and take a 32-29 lead just three minutes into the half. The Captains and Pride traded leads for most of the half until a mini-run gave the Captains a 56-48 lead with 2:25 remaining in the game. During the last two minutes of regulation, The Pride chipped away at the deficit with several free throws, a key three pointer by Chakiris Moss and a layup with eight seconds remaining R.J. Smith that sent the game to overtime.
CNU was able to secure the win with clutch free throws down the stretch by

Paul Going (Chesapeake, VA) whose two free throws with 5 seconds remaining proved to be with winning margin.
The Captains return to action on Saturday at Methodist in the final regular season contest for both teams. Methodist beat Shenandoah in overtime on Friday night to improve to 3-21 on the season. The 6:00 pm tip-off will be broadcast live on Xtra 99.1 FM and simulcast on Captains Sports Live on CNUsports.com.
