FROSTBURG, Md. -- Junior guard
Conley Taylor etched his name in the Christopher Newport University record book on Sunday, scoring the second most points in a single game in school history, but the Captains suffered a 95-91 setback on the road to Frostburg State (6-5).
Taylor's 44 points is second to only Ted Berry's program-record 47 points set in 1993 and is just the fifth 40-point performance in school history. It was the first in nearly 17 years, with the last 40-point performance also coming from Berry, with 40 against Ferrum on Feb. 9, 1994. Taylor finished with 44 points on 19-of-30 shooting (.633).
The Captains fell to an 18-point halftime deficit and were down by 21 within a minute of the second half when Taylor took over. The junior guard from Newport News went off in the second half, scoring 35 points and setting a new CNU record for points in a half. Berry also held that record, scoring 33 vs. Salisbury State in 1993. Taylor went 15-for-18 from the field in the second half including one three-pointer, and knocked down 4-of-5 free-throws.
His efforts would pull CNU back within two with 2:18 remaining, as he knocked down a layup after a
Tra Benefield steal. After a pair of Bobcat free-throws, Taylor hit a jumper with 1:45 remaining to get the Captains back within two again, but Frostburg State would hold on in the final two minutes.
CNU shot a tremendous 65.7% from the field during their second half charge, led primarily by Taylor's 15-18 performance. Benefield also had 12 points in the second stanza, including a trio of three-pointers. The rookie guard would finish with 20 points, the fifth 20-point performance of his young eight-game career.
Both teams had an impressive shooting night, as the Bobcats turned in a 56.6% performance on 30-of-53 shooting, while the Captains were hitting at a 53.8% clip on 35-of-65 shooting.
Leading the way for FSU was Maurice Williams posting a double-double, with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Five Bobcats were in double figures in Sunday's game.
These two teams will now take a holiday break before they face off against eachother again in their next game as a part of the Captains Shootout. That game will be on Wednesday, December 29 at 7:30 pm.
