St. Mary's City, MD – The Christopher Newport University men's basketball team lost 86-67 at St. Mary's College of Maryland Wednesday night. The loss drops the Captains to 4-2 on the season and 0-2 on the road.
“They are a very well coached team and they do not beat themselves, “ said Head Coach John Krikorian. “There were points in the game where we let the emotion effect us.”
The Seahawks jumped out to an early 20-6 lead and CNU controlled the game from start to finish. The Captains were able to cut the lead to seven midway through the first half but St. Mary's went to the half with a 40-30 lead.
CNU was led by freshman Tra Benefield (Folkston, GA) who poured in 22 points to go with 6 rebounds. Mike Green and Brian Herrmann who each added 12 points joined Benefield in double figures. Junior guard, Hector Feliciano-Ayala registered his first career double figure scoring effort with 11 points.
Wednesday's loss was the first game in a four-game stretch that CNU will play on the road during the month of December. The Captains return to action on Monday, December 13 at 5:00 pm when they will travel to Fredericksburg, VA for a game against Mary Washington.
