MARYVILLE, TN -- The Christopher Newport University football team took to the road Saturday and earned their fourth straight win, 42-10 over the Fighting Scots of Maryville College.  The win improved CNU to 5-4 overall and 5-1 in the USA South and keeps the Captains atop the USA South standings.

Sophomore quarterback, Christian Woelfel-Monsivais (Stafford, VA), made his second start of the season and led the Captains by throwing for 206 yards and four touchdowns on 14 completions.  Woelfel-Monsivais connected with junior tight end, Justin Reidelbach (Richmond, VA), for a 15-yard touchdown less than seven minutes into the game after a Ryan Wever (Centreville, VA) interception on the Scot's first series gave the Captains the ball on the Maryville 28 yard line.

The Captains added first half touchdown receptions by T.J. Foster (Randolph, VA), Scott Arvai (Manassas, VA) and Daniel Bryant (Lynchburg, VA), the first career touchdown reception for the senior tight-end. Senior running back, Keith Gaines (Roanoke, VA) added to the Captains' scoring total with a 10-yard touchdown run that capped a seven play, 64 yard drive and accounted for all of the first half scoring. Gaines finished the day with 131 yards rushing on only 16 carries.

The Captains defense stymied Maryville's passing attack for the entire first half forcing three punts and two additional interceptions, one more for Wever and the second interception of the year for linebacker Mike King (Centreville, VA).  CNU's defense held the Scots to only 74 yards of total offense in the first half.

King led all defenders with 14 tackles on the day, including one behind the line of scrimmage. The Captains defensive line harassed Maryville quarterback Dustin Williams most of the day and held him to 18 – 31 passing with only one touchdown to his three interceptions.

CNU finished the day with 434 total yards of offense, adding a five-yard Myles Reid (Warrenton, VA) touchdown run in the second half to complete the scoring. Reid chipped in 79 yards on the ground.

With the win, CNU remains tied for the USA South Athletic Conference lead at 5-1 but own the tie-breaker over North Carolina Wesleyan, also 5-1 in the league, after defeating the Battling Bishops on October 16 in Rocky Mount, NC. The Captains conclude the regular season next Saturday at home against Methodist University and will clinch the seventh USA South championship in ten years with a win. The game will be the last of Methodist coach Jim Sypult's career.
