NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In the opening round of the 2010 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship, the Captains of Christopher Newport (15-4) suffered a loss to the Lynchburg Hornets (17-3), 1-0, eliminating the home team from the postseason tournament.

A goal from the Hornets leading goal scorer, Jenny Weir, came in the 43rd minute of play to give Lynchburg the lone score of the match. Earlier this season, the two teams battled to a 1-0 final, with the Captains taking the win.

The Captains had their best chance in the first half, as Chrissy Kurecki put a shot on frame to the right of the goalkeeper, but Melanie Tenney stepped in to make a defensive save. CNU also had a penalty stroke in the first half, but Tiffany Frye, the Lynchburg keeper, made the save.

Sophomore reserve Chrissy Kurecki led the way for CNU with three shots on goal, while Jordan Snider and Paige Childers each added a pair. Brittany Bradsher made seven saves in goal for the Captains.

Frye earned the win for Lynchburg, making 10 saves. Offensively, Weir scored the gamewinning goal off an assist from Kristina Morris, while Haili Hartman led the way with four shots on-goal.

CNU's season ends with a 15-4 overall mark after making their fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
