FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The CNU women's soccer team improved to 7-4-1 overall and 3-0-0 in the USA South with a road victory at Methodist College today, 2-1. The Captains got goals from senior
Sam Ciaravino (Burke, Va.) and junior
Shelby Walters (San Antonio, Texas) in a come-from-behind effort that saw the Captains winning their fifth straight game.
Both teams went into halftime empty-handed, and the defenses ruled the frame as there were only four shots taken in the first half. The second half was a different story, though, as the two teams combined for three goals and 10 shots on-goal.
Methodist broke through first, with a goal in the 60th minute. Lauren Colenda beat her defender on the right side and sent in a shot for the score.
CNU would answer quickly, though, as Ciaravino posted her eighth goal of the season just under four minutes later. She took a shot from the left side that beat the Monarchs goalkeeper for the equalizer. In the 82nd minute, Walters would notch the gamewinner with her second goal of the season, off a deflection on the right side.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Meghan Gumbs (Mastic, N.Y.) allowed just the one goal while making four saves in the win as she saw her goals against average drop to 1.88 for the season.
Ciaravino moves into a tie for fourth all-time in career goals, with 27. She matches Paniz Asgari ('06) and is just two behind Laura McFerrin ('01) for third all-time.
CNU is unbeaten in their last six games and have opened the USA South regular season a perfect 3-0 mark. They will return to the pitch tomorrow as they travel to Greensboro College with kick-off set for 2:00 pm.
