NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nation's top-ranked men's soccer team, Christopher Newport University's, ran their program-record win streak to 12 with an impressive offensive outburst over USA South foe Ferrum, 7-0. The Captains improve to 12-0-0 overall, 2-0-0 in USA South, while Ferrum drops to 2-8-2, 0-1-1 in conference action.

The Captains improve to 17-0-2 at Captains Field in the last two seasons with the victory and earned their eighth shutout of the season in just 12 games so far.

The first two goals came very early for the Captains had a pair in the game's opening ten minutes. Leading goal scorer Winston Mattheisen scored his sixth of the season, the eventual gamewinner, just 4:12 into the match. Senior Chris Thome saved the ball on the goal line and sent a cross to the front of the goal mouth, where Andrew Bonorden flicked it to Mattheisen, powering it in for the score.

Just over four minutes later, Mattheisen would assist on the first of two goals by Danny Franklin, with a nifty heel flick on the right side of the field.

In the second half, the Captains really exploded, as Franklin added his second goal of the game just 2:12 into the frame. Mattheisen found Thome on the left side, who then sent a low line drive wide right of the goal, where Franklin re-directed it far post.

The Captains leading scorer this season, Brian Lybert, got in on the action in the 57th minute, off Bonorden's second assist. Following that goal, head coach Steve Shaw emptied his bench, but showed off his depth as Stephen Holmes, T.J. Byrd, and Jack Cooper all lit up the scoreboard late.

The Captains defensive line, led by Sean Moriarty, Trevor Moyer, David Haas, and Kyle Rose stood up the opponents attack again, for the eighth time this season. The CNU defense is currently sporting a .750 shutout percentage on the season, and junior goalkeeper Justin Wolfe saw his goals against average drop to 0.34 for the year.

Ferrum took seven shots in the game, putting two on-frame. Leading scorer Aaron Gustine led the way, with three including one on-goal, while Matt Janssen added a pair, with one on-frame.

CNU outshot the Panthers 34-7, including pressuring the Panthers keeper all night with 16 shots on-goal. The Captains spread seven goals and nine assists between ten different players as Franklin led the way with four points on two goals and Mattheisen added three points with a goal and two assists.

The Captains will hit the road for the next four as the #1 team in the nation will face N.C. Wesleyan next, this Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
