NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport University men's soccer team retained the nation's top ranking this week, according to the HendrickCars.com/NSCAA Coaches Poll. CNU went 2-0 last week and tied a program-best win streak with their 10th straight to open the 2010 season.
Last week, the Captains traveled to Texas to face off against Southwestern University and host Trinity University, who was ranked sixth in the nation. CNU earned a 2-1 victory against Southwestern and then posted a 1-0 shutout win over the top ten Tigers program. Junior forward and USA South Player of the Week
Winston Mattheisen (Norfolk, Va.) led the way, scoring both game-winning goals.
CNU has opened the season 10-0-0 and is one of just four teams at any level that remains perfect this season (Butler-NCAA I, Midwestern St.-NCAA II, Dominican-NCAA III). The 10 wins leads the nation as well.
The Captains will put the perfect mark on the line tomorrow, October 6 at #25 Mary Washington (7-1-1).
The Eagles are freshly marked as a Top 25 team, earning the honor for the first time this season in this week's poll. Kick-off in Fredericksburg is set for 4:00 pm. Live stats are available
