NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The second-ranked Christopher Newport University men's soccer team improved to 17-1-1 overall and rounded out the USA South regular season at 5-1-0 with a 3-1 victory over Greensboro College (3-12-3, 0-4-2) in tonight's finale. Midfielder
Clif Kipper (Hayes, Va.) led the way, scoring a pair of goals for CNU in the win.
The Captains would take a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute of action on Kipper's second goal of the season. He stepped up for a penalty kick after a Greensboro hand ball in the box. Despite a 12-3 advantage n shots, the offensive pressure from CNU would not score again in the first half, as the Greensboro keeper, Woody Wilder, made four saves in the frame.
After halftime, the Pride would tie it up at one goal apiece with a soft goal in the 61 minute of play. Patrick Hayes beat his defender on the left sideline, and then lofted a long arcing shot toward frame that snuck into the upper right corner of the goal for the equalizer.
Kipper would put CNU back on top, though, just over seven minutes later.
Denny Arinello kept the play alive in the 68th minute when his defender tried to clear it, but Arinello snared the deflection, spun and touched the ball into the center for Kipper. The senior then ripped a hard shot low and to the left, just past the diving keeper and into the near pocket. The helper from Arinello was the first of the season for the sophomore and gave Kipper his first gamewinner of the year.
Just over a minute later, the Greensboro defense would make a mistake when Wilder was coming out of the box to slide for possession, but it was touched back beyond his grasp and rolled into the goal for an own goal, giving CNU the 3-1 edge.
Wilder made seven saves in the loss, while Hayes led the way offensively for the Pride with two shots on-goal, including the lone goal. CNU goalkeeper
Justin Wolfe made one save in the game, and allowed just the 13th goal of the season in the Captains 19th game. Christopher Newport outshot the Pride, 21-5, led by Kipper's two goals.
