NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- CNU head coach
Steve Shaw won his 200th game on Saturday night, as the 4th ranked Captains blew past the St. Mary's College Seahawks. Senior
Chris Thome scored a pair of goals, including the gamewinner, as Christopher Newport improves to 15-1-1 overall this year.
Shaw's coaching record now sits at 200-80-18 for a winning percentage of over 70%. He has led the Captains to back-to-back Elite Eight appearances in the last two seasons and has the Captains poised at another late run this year, ranking in the nation's top five all season.
In tonight's game, it was the Seahawks that jumped on top early. Brian Payne sent a through ball behind the CNU defender on the right side, where Ted Scharfenberg was there to take on the goalkeeper one-on-one. Just 1:18 into the game, it was St. Mary's College on top, 1-0.
The two would battle in the first half, as CNU upped the offensive pressure. The Captains put 14 shots up in the first 45 minutes, including eight on frame. It wasn't until the 43rd minute of action that CNU would find the equalizer, though, as junior midfielder
Brian Lybert tickled the twine off an assist by
Sean Moriarty. The Captains leading scorer posted his ninth goal of the season, and would add an assist on the next goal.
Out of halftime, Christopher Newport came out firing. CNU would score three goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half, including the pair from Thome. Thome's first goal would prove to be the gamewinner, coming in the 47th minute. Lybert touched a pass to Bonorden in the middle, who went one more to Thome on the left side. With an open look at goal, the senior midfielder ripped a hard shot to the right side of the goal with his left foot.
Junior midfielder
Danny Franklin would have the assist on the next two goals for CNU. The first was a header by Thome in the 54th minute of play, followed by another header, from sophomore forward
Andrew Bonorden.
CNU outshot the Seahawks 29-6, applying a ton of pressure on net after the opening goal. St. Mary's goalkeeper, Paul Spranklin, played the full 90 and made nine saves. Offensively, Scharfenberg led the way with the one goal on two shots.
The Captains return to action this Wednesday night in a huge regional matchup against the 8th ranked Salisbury University Sea Gulls. Salisbury suffered a loss to York (Pa.) today, 1-0, but boast a 12-2-3 overall mark so far this season. Kick-off is set for 7:00 pm at Captains Field this Wednesday, October 27.
